Heating and Cooling Coils

Heating with steam or hot water, and cooling with water or another heat transfer fluid can often be a cost effective way to regulate temperature in metal finishing solutions.  Choosing the correct coil configuration involves a number of factors:

  • Chemical composition of the solution being heated/cooled
  • Steam pressure or water temperature
  • Heat up time and/or cooling time
  • Tank dimensions – L” x W” x H” or Diameter x H”
  • Operating temperature

Description

There are a variety of coil styles and materials to accommodate every metal finishing heating and cooling application.

Heat Exchanger Styles

  • External heat exchangers – in line heat most commonly used in electroless nickel
  • Plate coils – thin metal rectangular heat exchangers commonly used in phosphating, cleaning and plating
  • Teflon Spaghetti coils – thin tubes of Teflon coils that provide high surface area
  • Teflon Heating/Cooling coils – tubular Teflon coils for aggressive chemicals
  • Grid Coils – metallic tubular grid configuration commonly used in cleaning and plating solutions
  • Serpentine Coils – metallic tubular serpentine configuration
  • U-Shaped Coil – simple u-shape for low surface area applications

Materials

  • Stainless Steel – 304 & 316
  • Titanium
  • Zirconium
  • Teflon – PTFE
  • Tantalum
