You Be The Chemist

You Be The Chemist is an educational and fun academic competition for 5-8th grade students in the science of chemistry designed by the Chemical Education Foundation. While this is the first year the challenge was conducted in this area of Connecticut, You Be the Chemist is a national program with many participating states. This year five Waterbury, CT area middle schools participated, including City Hill in Naugatuck, Newtown, Memorial in Middlebury, Rochambeau in Southbury and Thomaston. Over one hundred students participated in the program through qualifying exams and regional challenges held earlier this year. With support from their families and teachers, the students studied diligently for weeks to prepare. The top six scorers from those local challenges advanced to the state challenge.

Prizes

Both the winner and runner-up received prizes including a savings bond and commemorative plaque. All six participants received a pair of passes to the Connecticut Science Center scheduled to open in Hartford later this year.

The event was held at Timexpo, the Timex Museum and was sponsored by Hubbard-Hall Inc. in Waterbury CT in partnership with Charkit Chemical Corp. in Norwalk, CT and the Chemical Education Foundation (a division of the National Association of Chemical Distributors).
