Connecticut You Be The Chemist Challenge
On Saturday April 28th, ten students from local middle schools competed in the You Be The Chemist Challenge (YBTC) at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, which was hosted by Hubbard-Hall Inc.
YBTC is an educational and fun academic competition for 5-8th grade students in chemistry designed by the Chemical Educational Foundation. While this was the fourth year the challenge was conducted in this area of Connecticut, YBTC is a national program with several states participating. Five western Connecticut area schools signed up for the 2012 program and approximately 150 students participated.
Henry Hu of Middlebury CT took top spot as state champion, securing a spot at the YBTC National Challenge Competition scheduled for this June. The 1st runner-up, Caelan Ritter, is a student at Newtown Middle School and Jarred Cocomazzi of Southbury was 2nd runner-up.
The Connecticut YBTC Challenge was sponsored and hosted by Hubbard-Hall Inc. in partnership with Charkit Chemical Corp, U.S. Chemicals, LLC and CellMark Chemicals.
Prizes for the YBTC challenge included: trophies, medals, gift cards to the Connecticut Science Center gift store, e-readers and a $200 award to the school of the champion. Henry Hu will represent Connecticut in the National YBTC where the top students from around the country will compete. The participants in the National competition receive an expenses paid trip to Philadelphia from the Chemical Educational Foundation
