Achieve a Quality Black Finish with Fewer Hazards

Are you looking to achieve a high quality, blackened steel finish without corrosion problems and the use of excessive chemicals? A Black Zinc phosphate, like Hubbard-Hall’s Mi-Phos™, is an excellent alternative with longer salt spray protection, lower operating temperatures and fewer hazardous chemicals: Recommended operating parameters include temperatures of 175 degrees F to 185 F and a chemical concentration 6% by volume. While most hot black oxides require operating temperatures of 265 F and have 6 lbs of caustic salts dissolved in each gallon, zinc phosphate chemical concentration is around less than 10% of that at 0.4 lbs of material per gallon in the process tank.

For a high performance, flat black finish with Mi-Phos™ Black zinc phosphate, follow the process outlined below:

Black Phosphate on steel

  1. Aquaease SL 986, 10%, 160F, 5 min
  2. Rinse
  3. Mi-Phos Black Solution 9%, 15 sec
  4. Rinse
  5. Mi-Phos Z10, 6 %, 185F, 15 min
  6. Rinse
  7. Metalguard 410 , 100% (wet oil)
