Volume 15 Issue 2 Spirit of Excellence Award to HH Associates: 68% Participation in United Way CampaignTime to Get Ready for the Dog Days of Summer
Incidentally, glycol does act as a biocide (prevents growth of organic organisms like algaes) but must be kept at a minimum 25% to serve this important function. In fact, at lower percentages than recommended the glycol in the water can have an opposite effect and act as “food” for bacterial growth. Unless an equipment manufacturer specifically recommends a lower concentration of glycol, this minimum should be observed and maintained. Think about the water in a swimming pool that’s been covered all winter without any chemical additives and remember what that water looked like by spring. This can be happening in your system right now.
Systems containing 250 gallons or more of Dow glycols also qualify for free annual in-depth fluid analysis immediately following a system fill and annually thereafter. For HVAC eontractors responsible for maintaining a system or unit, this can be an added valuable, billable service performed yearly for their customers. For on-site maintenance personnel, the test results can be very helpful in keeping systems running properly. The test kits are free and can be obtained directly from Dow by calling 989-636-3318 (Danielle). (Request a few for future system checks). A complete fluid analysis, including pH level, glycol concentration, contaminants and inhibitor condition will be provided to the customer at no charge. Dow not only provides concise results, but also makes specific recommendations on re-boosting the formula to its original, specifications. Hubbard-Hall also keeps a supply of the test kits on hand in our Waterbury office for those customers needing them more quickly. Receiving the analysis from Dow’s Michigan lab can take 2-3 weeks, especially during the busy times of year like spring and fall, so be sure to get your kits and send those samples off as quickly as possible. As usual, Hubbard-Hall remains a partner in your purchase, and our staff is more than happy to assist you with technical information and advice on how to get peak performance from your Dowfrost ™ and Dowtherm SR-1 ™ system. Please contact Wendy DeBernardo, Heat Transfer Fluids Product Specialist by phone (800-513-2837) or email wdebernardo@hubbardhall.com for more information. (The preceding information was taken from Dow’s Engineering and Operating guide for Dowfrost ™. Some of the printed books are still available upon request) New News: Want to make sure your system is maintained with the proper glycol in the future? As new personnel may someday become responsible for performing system maintenance, they may not be clearly aware that you are using Dowfrost ™ and Dowtherm SR-1 ™. Hubbard-Hall and Dow now provide free pipe stickers to clearly label your systems. They’re great for preventing the “What kind of glycol is in this?” question five years down the road. When you’re using Dow’s glycols, stick with the best! "New Made Old Made Easy" Aged or Weathered Metal Finishing
There are probably several factors for the explosion of antique coloration for metals. One is just that Americans are becoming more sophisticated in their interior design and taste. Design today is no longer a single color and that detail of texture and multiple layers of color follow through to the metal object in the room as well. The contrast of color is very effective in reinforcing the details of intricate design.Original and period reproduction homes from Colonial through Victorian are being furnished and refurbished with appropriate “old” hardware and décor. Bathrooms with modern plumbing now have the option of antique looking fixtures, towel racks, hinges and knobs all reflecting the period design. Reproduction Lighting from the Arts and Crafts style and Art Nouveau have a wide variety of patinas for metal. The “aged” look has several maintenance advantages such as not having to polish the brass door knob every week. The coloration of the metal show off more detail of an intricate and decorative object. Relieving for a two tone appearance causes patterns to stand out where they would be lost in a monotone of color. These reproduction finishes can be rapidly accomplished to produce hardware finishes that would take many years to happen naturally. Hubbard-Hall has a wide line of chemistry for coloring metals. We offer both hot and room temperature processes. Samples are available and our applications lab can finish parts to quickly arrive at a desired color.
