Volume 15, Issue 1 HH Driver Completes 3rd Guard Tour in the Middle East
Steve Essex (far right), a 22 year veteran of Hubbard-Hall and truck driver working out of the Wilmington, MA division, has recently completed a 6 month tour in Kuwait as part of his third call up in the last three years for the 143rd Air Wing Guard based out of Quonset Point, RI. While stationed at Ali Al Salem Air Force Base in Kuwait, Steve served as a Vehicle Operations Superintendent with the 386 AEW (Air Expeditionary Wing) and 386 ELRS (Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron). He oversaw 25 troops and was responsible for 78 vehicles. Steve stayed in touch with Hubbard-Hall via fairly regular e-mail and reported as follows:
Aircraft haul anything from troops to baby wipes. We work 5 days on 1 day off. The culture, weather and terrain out here are nothing like the States. The one thing I am really missing believe it or not are colors. Everything is sand color. No grass or trees or reds or yellows. On the good side, you would not believe what the sky looks like at night. More stars than you can imagine. Also while away I have a wonderful wife who is holding down the home front and 100% support from you guys at Hubbard-Hall which helps a lot as I can stay focused on mission out here and not worry about job as some people are doing." Steve joined Hubbard-Hall in 1985, working as a driver out of the Lincoln, RI division. When that division closed, Steve began rising at 4 AM in order to pick up his load at the Wilmington, MA plant and turning around to make deliveries to Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts customers. Hubbard-Hall customers can expect to see Steve behind the wheel again when he completes his assignment in May. Spring Reminder: Time to clean your heat transfer systemWhen preparing your Dowfrost® or Dowtherm® heat transfer system for its annual maintenance and flushing, remember to thoroughly clean all lines, valves and pumps. Be sure to clean out any residue, rust, scale and sediment. Traces of chloride -- whether from old fluid or residue left behind from an acid cleaner -- can also contribute to corrosion and should be removed. We recommend a more aggressive cleaning for larger Dowfrost® or Dowtherm® systems that may be heavily corroded or have demonstrated a significant performance reduction. In this situation, consider a professional cleaning by an experienced company that includes the use of an inhibited acid followed by neutralization and phosphatization. As with any cleaning, it is imperative to remove all traces of the cleaning agent with clean water. For additional technical data on our complete line of heat transfer fluids, including the Dowfrost® and Dowtherm® products, please visit our Heat Transfer Fluids page. Hubbard-Hall Wins CT Family Business of the Year Honors
Chairman Charles T. Kellogg (l) is a 5th generation family member involved in Hubbard-Hall, which has been in business since 1849. He is pictured with his daughter Molly Kellogg, a Vice President, and his nephew, Andrew K. Skipp who currently runs the company as CEO and President. Over the last 158 years, Hubbard-Hall has expanded beyond its traditional Waterbury, CT roots and services customers throughout the US, Europe and Asia.
Top 3 Tips for Better Boiler TreatmentWater treatment for boilers and cooling towers has a profound impact on utility and maintenance costs, equipment life, worker safety, regulatory compliance and more. By integrating advanced chemical treatment programs with the proper feed, monitoring and control systems, industrial cooling and boiler systems can be assured of safe and reliable operation. If we were to identify the top three critical components of a successful Boiler Treatment and Cooling Water Program, they would be: 1) Identify the proper pre-treatment and chemical treatment program for the control of corrosion, deposition and microbiological fouling in the operating systems. Left uncontrolled, any of these conditions will cause a loss of system capacity, reduced energy efficiency and shortened equipment life. 2) Apply an up-to-date automatic chemical feed and delivery system to save energy, improve worker safety, and lower costs. Properly applied, total water management costs a facility nothing. Money spent for products and services are repaid through reductions in energy costs and improvements in system efficiency. 3) Institute a customer in-house testing and monitoring program that will help achieve these critical objectives of keeping your boilers and cooling towers clean and operating efficiently with no down time. Waste Water Treatment Product Contains TOSCA Approved CatalystEmploying an innovative, catalyzed chemical oxidation process, AquaPure OE provides a highly effective method for treating recalcitrant chemical contaminants in soil and water. The product is effective on MTBE, TCE, PCE, vinyl chloride, pesticides and phenols. AquaPure OE also rapidly treats sulfides in municipal and industrial water applications, eliminating odors and greatly reducing corrosion caused by hydrogen sulfide. When treating contaminated soil, AquaPure OE can be metered in either in-situ or ex-situ using pugmills or farming equipment. Treatment times are typically less than 4 hours for soil treatment. Proper dosing of Aquapure OE combined with an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide will convert the target contaminants to CO2, water and salts. Users of Aquapure OE benefit from an easy to use product with a pH of 7. The catalyst is TOSCA approved, and the process requires no capital investment. In addition, users get a double benefit of eliminating odor AND corrosion. This can eliminate complaints of odor as well as the costly repair and replacement of pipes and infrastructure due to corrosion of H2S. Six hundred grade school children from Driggs School (Waterbury, CT) received a fun introduction to some of the basics of chemistry at a "You Be The Chemist" fair in November. The event was sponsored by Hubbard-Hall to honor Chairman Chuck Kellogg's 75th birthday.During the day long event, every single child in the K-5 school participated in at least one hands-on experiment, ranging from making "goofy" putty to converting the surface colors of metal. Hubbard-Hall associates set up stations around the school gym and spent 6 hours helping the kids become familiar with chemistry. "You Be The Chemist" is an award-winning program developed by the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) to promote young people's understanding of the pivotal role chemistry plays in their daily lives and to encourage interest in Chemistry as a potential career. The idea for the Fair was conceived as a birthday present for Chuck who attended Driggs School from 1936 to 1941 and currently participates -- along with 3 other Hubbard-Hall associates -- in their mentoring program. The children and staff marked the event by presenting him with 600 handmade cards and singing Happy Birthday during the presentation of a cake. Chuck and the 20 plus H-H employees who conducted the fair were thrilled with the enthusiastic participation by the students and staff at Driggs and look forward to seeing many future Chemists come out of this introduction. The "You Be the Chemist" curriculum is available to schools everywhere and was developed as an initiative by the NACD through their Responsible Distribution Process, which promotes safe, responsible chemical handling and community outreach. If you recognize the logo of a leading US manufacturer of batteries, then you know the battery cans were processed by one of Hubbard-Hall's AquaEase cleaners. Appreciated for its low foaming, mildly alkaline characteristics, the liquid cleaner used in the battery can cleaning application is effective on a wide variety of metal processing lubricants and alloys.
