New! Soak Cleaner for Aluminum

We have a solution for cleaning light weight aluminum without marring the finish. Introducing Aquaease® S 188 NE.

Accomplishing a clean finish on polished aluminum can be a difficult task…until now. We have developed a water soluble, non-silicated, phosphate-free, mild alkaline soak cleaner that will not etch the finish or mar the aluminum. Many companies are trying to remove the total weight from various products by switching to aluminum as an alternative. However, removing the stubborn fabricating oils and process contaminants without changing the dimensions of the component can be a real challenge.
Hubbard-Hall’s, Aquaease® 188 NE has been developed specifically to solve this problem. This is a water soluble solution that has a pH in the 9 – 10 range and will perform well in hard water areas. It is safe to handle and because it is both silicate and phosphate free waste treatment is not a problem. Contact us for additional information and to see if Aquaease® S 188 NE can work for you by emailing info@hubbardhall.com.

REACH Impact on North American Manufacturers

The European Parliament and Council of the European Union approved REACH (Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) that regulates manufacture, import and use of chemical substances within the member nations of the European Union. REACH does not establish any requirements that are directly applicable to businesses selling chemical substances or chemical-containing products from outside of the European Union.

North American manufacturers and distributors, which may include some of Hubbard-Hall’s customers that use chemicals in manufacturing processes, do not have any obligation under REACH to register any pure or blends of chemicals. However, some chemicals might be imported into the European Union and could be subject to the REACH regulation, but the obligation for REACH compliance is still the responsibility of the EU import suppliers.

North American manufacturers may get inquiries from EU import suppliers seeking technical and scientific studies such as acute and/or chronic toxicity and formulation information. Sharing the information will depend on the company’s limitations on confidentiality. Each request will need to be evaluated independently.

North American manufacturers may be authorized to appoint an "only representative" who would be responsible for chemical pre-registration plus any other registration requirements. A decision to use an "only representative" should be made only after careful consideration of the potential financial and regulatory liability issues that might occur.

So, REACH will definitely have an impact on North American manufacturers as the steps for REACH registration start in December 2008 for chemicals with production volumes over 1000 metric-ton-per year; and proceed through 2013-2018 for chemicals with production volumes of 1 to 100-metric-tons-per year. For the love of Miss Ruggerio

An off-hand remark about the Celtics revealed the connection of a shared childhood 41 years ago. Although Peter Tortolini, a warehouseman at the Wilmington, MA division, and Andrew Skipp, the company CEO based in Waterbury, CT, have worked at the same company for 8 years, they just discovered that they lived in the same hometown 4 decades ago and sat in the same home room class in 7th grade.

Over a cup of coffee after a recent company meeting, Peter and Andrew started talking about the great season the Celtics were having. When Peter mentioned that he used to take the T from Lynn, MA to the Boston Garden, Andrew reacted with surprise, saying he had lived in Lynn as a boy.

As it turns out, the year was 1967. The school was Cobbett Junior High in Lynn, MA. And the homeroom teacher was the lovely Miss Ruggerio. While Peter was born and spent 35 years in Lynn, Andrew spent just 3 years in this suburb just outside of Boston when his father was rector of a local church. That following May, Andrew and his family moved to Pennsylvania.

Peter is relatively new to Hubbard-Hall, having joined the Wilmington operation in 1999. Conversely, Andrew has spent much of his career with the company, beginning with a stint as an outside sales rep in Lincoln, RI plant 1977.

Go Celtics!

Cause & Effect

Does the cost of food and agriculture impact industrial chemicals and solvents?

…More than you could imagine…

The race to find suitable alternatives for petroleum based fuels has created significant volatility in many related products.

1. The Ethanol Effect
• Rapid increase in the demand for corn to produce ethanol
• Farmers planting record corn crops plus increased fertilizer applications to boost yields.
• Phosphate fertilizer demand surges as prices soar.

2. Biodiesel – Petroleum Diesel alternative are found soy bean oil and waste vegetable oil

3. Record Fertilizer Demand!
• In addition to carbon, hydrogen and oxygen plants need macronutrients in the following forms
• Nitrogen
• Phosphorus
• Potassium (potash)

4. Phosphorus derived from Phosphoric acid is critical

5. Potash from Potassium Chloride and potassium hydroxide

6. Sulfuric acid is required to make Phosphoric acid
• 49% of all US sulfuric acid produced goes to produce phosphoric acid.
• Ammonia (Critical component of nitrogen for fertilizer)

3M™ Novec™72DE Engineered Fluid is an excellent replacement for TCE or nPB

3M Novec Engineered Fluids offer safe, sustainable chemistry designed to balance performance with favorable environmental and worker safety properties.

• Excellent dielectric properties
• Wide range of boiling points
• Good materials compatibility
• Low toxicity and non-flammability
• Low global warming potential (GWP)
• Zero ozone depletion potential (ODP)
• Not a Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP)

Novec 72DE fluid is ideal for a wide range of cleaning applications including:

• Cleaning of oils, greases and waxes
• Coating and lubricant deposition
• Immersion and vapor degreasing
• Specialty solvent applications

It is intended to replace ozone depleting and chlorinated solvents as well as other solvent systems that do not have as favorable health, safety, or environmental properties. 3M Industrial Hygiene monitoring indicates there is a large margin of safety between the exposure guidelines that have been established for each of the components and exposures anticipated from intended end-use applications. Whereas the exposure guideline for TCE is intended to change to 10 ppm(8 hr TWA), none of the components in Novec72DE fluid have exposure guidelines less than 200 ppm(8 hr TWA).

Equipment Corner: Front Loading Temperature Controller

Semiconductor manufacturers: FUJIFILM offers a new front loading source temperature controller for efficient chemical delivery to the point of use. Designed to handle quartz and stainless steel bubblers, the TC 2000™ is available in 3 temperature range models and features a built-in removable spill containment system. The system also offers superb reliability by combining a tough vulcanized outer assembly with an air cooled Peltier element that averages a 100,000 hour life time.
